about
With their second album Nairobi punk band Powerslide have demonstrated a level of maturity in their songwriting remarkable for their age. The band have assertively shifted focus from their days of pronouncing skateboard hooliganism to take on the most serious issues that affect the human condition.
“Vacant Home” is their 3rd single from their album “Heavy Metal and Flowers” and follows “Darkness is my Home” a song dealing with Mental Illness. It is clear that songwriter Willy has taken the band into an introspective journey to examine themselves and in order to make some kind of chart in the sometimes rough seas of personal development. This is not a chance to merely express malcontent, on the contrary, these songs are intended for transcendence:
It is this quest for transcendence that connects this young band most deeply with their fans who are eager to learn and grow without repeating the mistakes of the older generation. It is for this reason that the band have begun to write songs about the significant experiences that shape our lives - but at the same time things that are not easily discussed, or rarely sung about in songs. With their new single “Vacant Home” the band addresses everyone’s dirty little secret, domestic abuse.

LYRICS
My home is broken
But I am not
It’ll take more than words
To bring me down
This vacant home
That I call my own
When I'm here I feel lost
When I'm here I feel alone
This house
Doesn't feel like home
Your words like knives
I'm paper thin
I swear these walls are caving in
This house
Doesn't feel like home
This isn't where I want to be
Too blind to hear
To deaf to see that
I can't take this
Constant violence
Rather be anywhere but here
All I want is some peace of mind
But it's clear I won't find that here
Home is not a place
(This vacant empty space)
It's a feeling
(I call my own)
And I'm still trying
(I'm still trying)
To find mine
Tears flow down my face
(Like tidal waves they crash)
Pain revealing
(I come undone)
Close my eyes, disappear
Far away
Away from here
From this darkness I call my home
This house
Doesn't feel like home
Your words like knives
I'm paper thin
I swear these walls are caving in
This house
Doesn't feel like home
This isn't where I want to be
Too blind to hear
To deaf to see that
I can't take this
Constant violence
Rather be anywhere but here
All I want is some peace of mind
But it's clear I won't find that here
Shut up
I think it's time for me to leave
